Road safety studies for the identification of hazardous locations and the formulation of proposals for the short-term improvement of road safety at 100 kms road axis. Technical studies for the rearrangement – improvement of existing at-grade junctions.

The road accident data of a 5-year period were analysed to identify “black spots” and relationships between accident rates and various parameters (weather, day-night, day of the week, time of day, driver age, type of vehicle, road condition, etc.), were established.

The road axis was divided in 8 separate sections with common characteristics of terrain relief, surrounding road uses, traffic flows, road characteristics, number of intersections, etc. Each section was examined independently regarding road safety and measures to improve safety were proposed for each section.

In addition, two at-grade junctions with poor accident record were designed at the final design study level, in order to upgrade the intersection standards to modern specifications and improve traffic safety. The preparation of topographical drawings was also included in the study scope. Supporting studies of hydraulic works, retaining walls, ditches, etc were carried out in the context of the final design studies.

Finally an environmental consideration of the impact of the proposed counter measures was carried out by the Consultant for the approval of the proposed interventions.
